Here are the facts about what happens when you add detergent to a cooling system. 


Adding detergent to a cooling system can have several negative consequences. Detergents are not designed for use in cooling systems and can cause a cascade of issues due to their chemical composition and properties. Here's what can happen when you add detergent to a cooling system:


1. Formation of deposits: Detergents/Degreasers contain surfactants and other chemicals that are meant to break down and dissolve dirt and grease. However, when added to a cooling system, they can also dissolve existing deposits and contaminants in the system, leading to the formation of new deposits. Some of these formations can be insoluble solids. These deposits can clog the radiator, heater core, and other cooling system components, reducing the system's efficiency and causing overheating.


2. Corrosion: Detergents/Degreasers may contain corrosive chemicals that can react with metal components in the cooling system, such as the radiator, water pump, and heater core. This can lead to accelerated corrosion, rust and damage to these critical parts, potentially causing leaks and coolant loss.


3. Foaming: Detergents/Degreasers can cause the coolant to foam, which can reduce its ability to effectively transfer heat. Foaming can create air pockets in the cooling system, hindering coolant flow and leading to localized overheating.


4. pH imbalance: Detergents/Degreasers can alter the pH level of the coolant. The cooling system is designed to work within a specific pH range to prevent corrosion & rust and maintain the proper chemical balance. Introducing detergents can disrupt this balance, making the coolant less effective at preventing corrosion.


5. Damage to seals and gaskets: The chemicals in Detergents/Degreasers may not be compatible with the seals and gaskets in the cooling system. Over time, this can cause deterioration and lead to coolant leaks.


6. Cooling system inefficiency: Ultimately, adding detergent to a cooling system can result in reduced cooling efficiency and potentially lead to engine overheating. In extreme cases, it may cause irreversible damage to engine components.


Any Detergents/Degreasers residue remaining in the system may adversely affect the chemistry of the coolant and may start eating the engine blocks and could cause a catastrophic failure. 


It's essential to use products specifically designed for cooling system maintenance and follow the manufacturer's guidelines.




PO4FIX - Phosphate Removal Flush 



  1. PO4FIX - Phosphate Removal Flush  is READY TO USE.
  2. Record water pump pressure and all temps
  3. Drain all old coolant
  4. Shutdown/Remove Surge Tank Cap
  5. Install 1” ball valve on each side of block underneath rail
  6. Fill with PO4FIX - Phosphate Removal Flush until overflow from Surge/Day Tank
  7. Start/Run Unit loaded at full speed with flush 4 hours at temp



  1. Shutdown/Remove Surge Tank Cap.
  2. Power wash Surge Tank with STH - Surge Tank Hose (while still hot and full). Let particles overflow. (15-20 min)
  3. Drain Flush via ball valve on each side of block underneath rail. (dispose as you would old coolant)
  4. Fill with deionized water until overflow from Surge/Day Tank.
  5. Start/Run Unit loaded at full speed until up to temperature and thermostats open.
  6. Continue to pump in water and overflow until clear at Surge/Day Tank before opening ball valves. (2 x volume) overflow until clean.
  7. Inspect water pump and replace thermostats.
  8. Drain Unit / Fill with New Coolant*


*(Best Practice) Do not leave or run with water only. 

Fill with coolant mix and 3%  CRI – Corrosion Rust Inhibitor
